He was born in Akron, Ohio on December 30; his mother was 16 at the time and raised him by herself. When he was at the age of high school he went to St. Vincent-St. Mary High School and in his freshman year (first year) he was a starter for the Fighting Irish basketball team. He had an average of 21 points and 6.2 rebounds and within the same year the team went on a 23 win and one lost record which lead to them winning the Division III state title.
The following year he would improve on those stats with an average of 25.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 5.8 assists and 3.8 steals and again they won the title on a better 26 wins and one lost record. After this feat he became the first sophomore named Mr Basketball in Ohio and was selected in the USA Today All-USA First Team. The following year his stats improved again and like the previous year he was name Mr Basketball of Ohio and earned a spot on the All USA first team also he was named the 2001- 2002 boys basketball Gatorade National Player of the Year. This was the time when he was given the nickname ‘King James’
The 2002 – 2003 season was the year when Lebron blew up in the media, he had declared interest in the 2002 draft but due to NBA rules a person has to finish High school before they can be considered. A petition was made to change the rules but it failed, around this time he had appeared in various media outlets such as Sports Illustrated and ESPN’s magazines. He became so popular that NBA stars would watch his games live and the games were televised as pay per view.
So it was almost destiny for him to go to a town that is featured in the same state he lives in. In the year 2003 he was the number one pick overall in the NBA Draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his game against Sacramento Kings he got 25 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals which was impressive for a debut. In the same season he became the youngest player to score at least 40 points. Over the years he improved on his stats and he won the MVP award consecutively in 2009 and 2010 but he wasn’t able to win the NBA title with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
If you were to compare this situation to other sports athletes in the other sports in the world it would be the equivalent of Lionel Messi moving to Manchester City for free. Its a move that could happen but no one would expect it. Many thought Lebron was going to stay with his hometown team and that he was going to re-sign but he didn’t make any hints about what he was going to do. So at this time Lebron was the most wanted man in NBA. He decided to leave and join Miami joining Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade who also were sought after free agents. This is a big deal as he joins fellow all star and Olympic champions this was a deal that will more people out of their Florida vacation rentals.
If we were to contrast with another Athlete at the top of game you would find similarities. Lebron is seen as one of the best. Lebron has had the most points scored in the most recent season while the same applies to Messi. Lebron has been seen as the successor of Michael Jordan who was one of, if not the best basketball player to ever grace the NBA courts, while Messi has been seen as the successor of Diego Maradona who is seen as one of the best players to ever grace a football pitchIf anything Lebron hasn’t done that Messi has done is win the big titles for the club he was at but likewise vice versa Lebron has had success on the international scene while Messi hasn’t had as much although Argentina did win the gold medal at the Olympics. In 2009 Lebron was given the MVP which meant his peers saw him as the best in the league whilst in the same year Messi was given the FIFA player of the year.
With Lebron going to the Miami Heat his chances for a NBA have increased it is one of the things that has eluded him all these years and although some will feel he has betrayed his roots, they can’t deny what a talented athlete he is.
